I grew up viewing the Lord’s table as a scary event. You can’t blame me, for I was taught that if you come to the table with sin in your heart, then you might die. Isn’t that what Paul said to the Corinthians? Sort of. But does that encompass the entirety of scriptural teaching concerning communion? No. Dear people, do we not all come to the table as sinners? Isn’t that what it’s all about?
What is more, I only took the Lord’s supper periodically. It wasn’t a weekly event. Why not? Well, don’t you know that if you do it every week, then it becomes “routine,” or “vain?” By the way, I think that is a real danger, but it’s not a weighty enough excuse for churches to refrain from partaking weekly from the Lord’s table. I guess the reason this is so fresh on my mind is that, as of late, the elders at my church (IBC) have been considering weekly communion. I am completely on board and hope they start very soon. As for my journey, I hope to post more about my thoughts.
