Demonic Confessions
It might sound strange but I think the demonic confessions of Jesus as Messiah in Mark are pretty cool. I’ve been translating through the Gospel of Mark, and I came across this interesting confession in Mark 1:24, “οιδα σε τις ει, ο αγιος του θεου.” There Jesus was, teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum, and immediately a possessed man came bursting in. No one else around Jesus realized the full depth of who he was–but the demons did. “I know who you are…”
What I find amazing is that Jesus rebuked this unclean spirit and commanded him to be silent. Perhaps the unclean spirit said too much too early in Jesus’ ministry. Perhaps Jesus was upset that his teaching was cut short. Nonetheless, it gave authority to his teaching, for those who saw were amazed. In sum, I find it ironic that some of the best confessions of Jesus as Messiah were from an evil source.
